Clients can now add personalized poetry to their list of party favors when they book Haikuists for their special event. The poems are in the form of haiku, traditional Japanese poetry, and are written on the spot for each guest who requests it.

The company’s latest service update coincides with the NY Times article on meaningful party favors that don’t get wasted or thrown away. According to the report, small, customized gifts are the best because guests tend to put more value on things that are unique to them. The report also talks about how these gifts are better for the environment and reduce the clutter at home.

Haiku is a form of ancient Japanese poetry that consists of three lines – the first and third lines have five syllables, and the second line has seven syllables. Though short, haikus in the ancient tradition must follow specific rules, like using a word that references the season, and the harmony the words need to have when the poem is read aloud. Haikuists use a more Westernized version of the haiku, where they follow the standard 5-7-5 syllable pattern, but use free verse to express their thoughts.

During the event, Haikuists will set up a table with cards and a typewriter where the poets will be stationed. Guests are invited to choose a card, which can be decorated to the client’s specifications, and give the poets an inspirational word or thought. Each haiku takes about a minute to complete.

According to Haikuists, poetry has the power to connect and move people in a way that photos and screens cannot. With just 17 syllables, guests get to share a special moment and get to know each other on a deeper level. These poems bring joy, inspiration, and strength to people. Many say they’ve kept theirs for years, and some even got tattoos of their haikus.

Guests can give whatever topic or point of inspiration they want, even silly ones. Haikuists have written poems about “skinny dipping” and “Kate Upton,” so guests are bound only by their imagination.

“Haikuists remind us of the power of words, our desire for love, and the importance of face-to-face connection in a screen-obsessed world,” a spokesperson said.
