“Energy prices are skyrocketing around the world. This is affecting everyone and some (renters and small business owners for example) experience it much more drastically than others. The issue with modern devices is that they are often left on standby after being turned off, thus leeching power from the house,” says co-founder and CEO Ryan Li on the inspiration behind the project. “That’s up to 10% of your monthly electricity bill. Another big reason is climate change. We can wait for the green infrastructure bill and another 10 years to implement all the necessary changes to make our grid cleaner and more reliable. Or we can choose to cut off power today and reduce emissions immediately.”
Inspired by the Teak tree for its formidable resistance to the elements and endurance, the Teak Smart Cube is a sturdy building block for a low carbon future. Appearing as a sleek cube power outlet, users simply plug their devices in while the AI “eMission Control” starts learning when plugged in devices are not in use, but still drawing energy. On a weekly basis, "eMission Control" identifies when to turn devices on and off for energy saving and carbon footprint reduction.
A physical button or the app allows for user override and the A.I. also knows when a device is actively being used so it can override any schedule. The Teak Smart Cube app can track not only the cost of electricity but also the breakdown of energy consumption by source (ie. wind, solar, hydro, gas, coal, etc). This helps users establish baseline energy usage and carbon emissions to gauge how they can improve over time. It also works to guide users to plant trees for annual emission offset, recycle old, unusable e-waste, and showcase how to upgrade energy efficiency for plugged-in appliances.
“Traditional power strips rely on you to unplug. Smart plugs rely on you to think about when to unplug. Teak does it for you with AI. You don’t need to physically unplug or even think about energy saving. It takes your usage and local utility grid data to identify when best to cut power on and off to devices without disrupting your lifestyle,” adds Li. “Even if you change your behavior, the AI will learn and adapt.
