8 Ways Businesses can go Green in Canada

Many Canadian businesses are adopting environment-friendly approaches to take advantage of tax credits, save money, and help the environment. More and more dedicated and intelligent people in the public and private sectors are deepening green business area roots in the Canadian economy. This article presents eight easy, simple ways businesses in Canada can go green.

Discover Your Passion

Many green businesspersons share that their wish to make a difference in some aspect of the environment drives them. This could be limiting food waste or reducing ocean plastic. Maybe you want to help other businesses run more sustainable operations or have the desire to develop a cutting-edge green product. Once you figure out your passion, it’ll be much easier to get started.

That said, let’s get into the eight ways to go green in Canada now.

1. Eliminate Paper

Technology has made it possible to do away with paper entirely. Half of all business waste is made up of paper, and more than 90% of paper comes from trees. Eliminating paper can be the first step. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Print on both sides of the papers
  • Recycle papers (including shredded ones)
  • Take prints only when unavoidable
  • Go for paperless solutions for billing and accounting
  • Use recycled paper

2. Choose a Green Web Hosting

Some hosting services adopt eco-friendly operations and practices in an effort to help the planet. Look for and build relationships with green vendors. This way, you can make sure you’re sourcing from an eco-friendly supply chain and not exacerbating global warming.

An example of an eco-friendly web hosting provider in Canada is GreenGeeks, who put their energy consumption back into the grid threefold by harnessing the power of green energy.

3. Save Electricity

Power plants are a leading source of carbon emissions, so saving electricity is a critical measure in the process of going green. You can:

  • Turn off lights and equipment when not in use
  • Go for LED bulbs (can save 20% – 50% in bills)
  • Get an energy audit and increase energy efficiency
  • Use energy-efficient equipment
  • Make the most of natural lighting

4. Reuse and Recycle

Recycle laptop batteries instead of throwing them away, and donate old monitors, printers, and computers to recycling agencies. Reuse as many accessories as possible. Ink cartridges deserve special attention. You can recycle cartridges safely using your supplier’s return package for used ones.

5. Build up a Green Culture

Promote green culture throughout your business. Encourage your team to adopt eco-friendlier ways and make them part of your initiatives. Post guidelines and rules on the board if you have one, and follow up with an emailed copy to each team member. You can’t go green unless your whole organization is committed to it.

Following other businesses’ successful examples will save you considerable time and money. Look at your competitors’ YouTube videos and social media. Invest in a trip to a thriving eco-business outside your region; they will probably be more open to questions.

6. Use Video Conferencing Instead of Traveling

This isn’t to conflict with the above tip, but remember that road transport accounts for three-quarters of all carbon emissions. It’s not always necessary to travel to meet with your clients. You can use video conferencing and other technologies for face-to-face meetings. This will also save your business time and money.

7. Discuss and Network

If you haven’t set up a business yet, talk to green business owners. Most cities and towns have seminars, meetings, and organizations designed to support budding entrepreneurs.

8. Seek Inspiration

As you get ready to launch, you’ll probably need to take the measures any aspiring entrepreneur faces before starting a successful company. Follow the example of successful companies. The world has never faced environmental challenges on this scale before, but the energy and creativity of visionaries are leading the way to a more sustainable world.
