Sanity Group has officially unveiled the results of its new study on contaminants located in black-market cannabis across the EU.
The study was conducted in the wake of Germany's partial cannabis legalization in April 2024. The new law built on the 2017 legalization of prescribed marijuana, expanding to recreational users.
Sanity Group has rounded up a group of volunteers through the social platform Reddit. The volunteers have submitted their black-market cannabis samples to the Sanity team using a sealed test kit, along with location info and a timestamp.
Following eight months of work and support of 200+ volunteers, the submitted samples were tested for biological components, pesticides, and other substances. The samples came from 20 German cities and 30 cities from elsewhere in the European Union.
The team has described the results as "shocking," noting that from 300+ samples that were tested, only 20%, or one in five samples, were safe and clean.
The remaining 80 percent of samples contained traces of various toxic substances, including human and animal feces, influenza, and Covid 19 viruses.
"We also found traces of cocaine, ketamine, crystal meth, MDMA, and even compounds from hairspray, as well as traces of toxic pesticides that are classified as illegal in Europe," the researches stated.
The worst results, the researchers added, came from Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. The full study results showcase how each city performed in tests. The page contains an interactive table that ranks cities with the most contaminants in the local illegal cannabis market , from highest to lowest, The table contains multiple columns, all of which can be sorted.
“The fact that over 50% of all samples tested positive for banned pesticides and over 60% contained human feces and bacteria is alarming,” stated said Finn A. Hänsel, the Founder at Sanity Group.
“This clearly indicates that most black-market cannabis is packaged under unsanitary conditions, emphasizing the need for quick action to give consumers access to cannabis produced under regulated safety standards.”
When it comes to specific substances, the research points out that 47% of samples contained cocaine, 32% had hairspray, and 65% contained traces of feces. Furthermore, hazardous pesticides were found in 71% of samples, while bacteria and viruses were located in traces in 74% of samples submitted.
The testing kit used in the process kit included a single test tube with a swab for conducting High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, along with four separate colorimetric tests for presence drugs, a fecal indicator bacteria test, a set of three PCR tests for the indicated bacteria, a pair of sterile gloves, and a mask.
