Battelle Hosted Spring Training Camp for the U.S. Cyber Team to Help Train the Next Generation of Cyber Experts

The U.S. Cyber Games Season III team joined Battelle cyber experts at a spring training event in preparation for the International Cybersecurity Championship set to take place later this year in Santiago, Chile.

Twenty-eight athletes from the Season III team, generally between ages 18-24, took part in skill-building and team-building exercises over the course of the Feb 16-19 weekend at Battelle’s Chantilly, Virginia offices. Battelle sponsors the U.S. Cyber Games Season III team, and the Battelle Cyber Innovations business line anticipates offering greater support as the athletes prepare for the global competition.

“The U.S. Cyber Games are vital to helping train the next generation of cyber experts and building a workforce capable of tackling increasingly complex issues important to the nation and the world,” said Battelle’s Wren Sigrest, who directs Battelle’s Cyber Innovations business line. “We see a shortage in the number of individuals with skill sets necessary to operate in today’s cyber environment, so we are happy to support efforts such as the U.S. Cyber Games.”

Battelle participants included Chris Issing, a Junior Tech Mentor and a regular competitor in past cyber games and former U.S. Cyber Games – Season I athlete. Issing was part of the first-ever U.S. Cyber Team to represent the nation at the International Cyber Security Challenge that took place in Athens, Greece in 2022. Battelle cyber co-op student, Dylan Knoff, is on the Season III team along with Gaelin Shupe, who recently interned with Battelle and is set to begin full-time in the Cyber business line this spring.

Battelle leverages a broad base of cyber domain excellence, multidisciplinary scientific expertise, and world-class research facilities to understand offensive attacks and quantify risks to the mission in a rapidly evolving environment. Battelle delivers comprehensive solutions that enhance cyber defense and national security in a rapidly changing global cyber landscape.

The U.S. Cyber Games was created by Katzcy in cooperation with the NICE program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“The U.S. Cyber Team is grateful to Battelle for hosting this year’s Spring Training camp focused on Attack and Defense. From teamwork to tools to tactics, these training camps are a vital part of building a high-performing cyber team to represent the nation,” shared Jessica Gulick, CEO & Founder of Katzcy/PlayCyber, and Commissioner of the U.S. Cyber Team.
