Hill-Lopes Scholars Program at Towson University, the Premier Program for Women in STEM, Celebrates Five Years of Supporting Women Students in Male-dominated Sectors

Towson University has so far welcomed five cohorts of students pursuing degrees in STEM fields into the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program. The program, founded by donors Barbara Hill and husband Ancelmo Lopes, provides a unique combination of financial support, one-on-one mentoring, community building, career exploration and confidence-boosting experiences to prepare women scholars to confidently enter historically male-dominated sectors.

“As someone who understands the challenges women often face in male-dominated fields, supporting this program is my way of helping break down those barriers to create new pathways to success for women in STEM,” says Hill, operating partner at NexPhase Capital. “Through the program, we can foster a future where these talented women are empowered to lead, innovate and inspire others as they pursue careers in STEM fields.”

Each scholar benefits from community building, career exploration and professional development. The supportive community helps scholars achieve their fullest potential. Through visits to businesses and organizations, scholars get a behind-the-scenes look at future careers and the opportunity to build lasting relationships with potential employers. Throughout their time in the program, meet established women in STEM, benefit from career-centered training, build professional skills and attend conferences.

“These young women gain access to unique opportunities that help them develop academically and professionally. As we equip them with tools they need to succeed, they are becoming the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of STEM,” says Kristin Pinkowski, program coordinator.

In the past five years, women have continued to push their academic and professional journeys forward at TU and other esteemed institutions. Several have begun their careers at places like Northrop Grumman, Booz Allen Hamilton and the Department of Defense.

“I found my passion for computer science through this program and all the support made me more confident about pursuing a career in cybersecurity,” says Emily Aguirre ’25, a scholar who will join Deloitte upon graduation in the spring.

Consider making a gift to sponsor events, field trips and the conference fund, so we can continue to improve the advancement and retention of women in STEM fields.
