As a physician-scientist, Dr. Jhaveri, professor of medicine and associate chief in the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension at Northwell Health, has authored many highly- cited publications in the field of glomerular diseases, onconephrology and COVID-19 related kidney injury. His clinical and research interests are in glomerular diseases and onconephrology – cancer and its effect on the kidney.

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) represents more than 21,000 kidney health professionals working to help people with kidney disease. Now in its fifth year, the Mid-Career Distinguished Leader award annually recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and outstanding contributions to the field of nephrology, “leading the fight against kidney disease.”

“Being a recipient of the ASN Distinguished Leader Award is an incredible honor, and I am immensely grateful to the society for recognizing my contributions to our field,” said Dr. Jhaveri, who is also faculty at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. “I am eager to continue my research to better advance treatment and care in the field of nephrology.”

Dr. Jhaveri is a founding member and past president of the American Society of Onconephrology and a founding member of the International Society of Glomerular Diseases. He serves as the editor-in-chief for the ASN’s journal, ASN Kidney News. In 2021, Dr. Jhaveri won the National Kidney Foundation’s New York- Excellence in Care Award.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Jhaveri and his team were the first to recognize and publish data on acute kidney injury during its early months of hospitalizations and more recently, Northwell Health received a $1.25 million endowment gift to fund the newly created Galdi Fellowship in Onco-Nephrology and Glomerular Kidney Diseases, which will begin in July with Dr. Jhaveri as the fellowship program director.

“We congratulate Dr. Jhaveri for his recognition as a leader by the ASN,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes and Karches Family Distinguished Chair in Medical Research. “As a highly respected physician-researcher, Dr. Jhaveri’s career work is advancing knowledge which will directly benefit patients with kidney disease.”
