Understanding Fabric Safety Levels: A Guide to A, B, and C Class Fabrics

In today’s consumer market, the safety of textiles is paramount, especially for products that come into direct contact with the skin. Fabrics are categorized into three safety levels: Class A, Class B, and Class C, each with distinct characteristics and recommended uses.

Class A Fabrics represent the highest safety standard and are primarily designed for infant products. These include items such as diapers, underwear, bibs, pajamas, and bedding. Class A fabrics must adhere to strict regulations, with formaldehyde content not exceeding 20 mg/kg. They are free from carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes and heavy metals, ensuring minimal skin irritation. Additionally, these fabrics maintain a pH level close to neutral and exhibit high color fastness, making them safe for sensitive skin.

Class B Fabrics are suitable for adult daily wear, including shirts, T-shirts, skirts, and pants. These fabrics have a moderate safety level, with formaldehyde content capped at 75 mg/kg. While they do not contain known carcinogens, their pH may slightly deviate from neutral. Class B fabrics are designed to meet general safety standards, providing good color fastness and comfort for everyday use.

Class C Fabrics, on the other hand, are intended for products that do not directly contact the skin, such as coats and curtains. These fabrics have a lower safety factor, with formaldehyde levels meeting basic standards. While they may contain small amounts of chemical substances, they remain within safety limits. The pH of Class C fabrics may also deviate from neutral, but they are not expected to cause significant harm. Color fastness is average, and some fading may occur over time.

Understanding these fabric safety levels is crucial for consumers, especially when selecting products for infants or those with sensitive skin. By being informed, shoppers can make safer choices that prioritize health and well-being.
